A Look at 21st Century Lighting
Did you know?
Lighting is responsible for 19% of the world’s total energy consumption. Implementing new lighting solutions to replace outdated lighting fixtures could save a total of 20% of the energy consumed; in real terms a 53 billion euro saving on energy consumption.
FACT
75% of all Europe’s office lighting is based on outdated, energy inefficient lighting.
Why?
Outdated Technology
Most conventional offices across the globe are illuminated using ‘600mm x 600mm’ fluorescent luminaires, installed in a suspended ceiling. These luminaires use an older type (T8) fluorescent tube which is less energy efficient than those now available. The fluorescent lamps are also powered by older technology ‘magnetic’ control gear which is highly inefficient compared to what is available today.
What is the solution?
The new types of linear fluorescent lamps produce much more light than their predecessors. For example an older type 600 x 600 office lighting fixture will use 4 x 18w tubes and because the control gear is inefficient the total wattage consumed by this luminaire would be 116 watts. Replacing these lamps with new more efficient tubes would immediately save 10% on the energy consumed.
When you take into consideration the total lighting consumption worldwide and the energy savings achievable, the potential is enormous.
Changing the complete luminaire for a new version using new fluorescent (T5) lamps and electronic control gear could net you an energy saving of up to 28%.
